Hi, I have been reading the moving tributes to this clearly well loved gentleman.
I own a book called ‘Once Long Ago’ which is a collection of folk tales from around the world. I bought it a few years ago because I love the stories and illustrations in it.
The book has the previous owner’s name and address printed on the inside cover:
“Gordon Findlay Dyer
Monrovia”
I looked up the name and came across the wonderful tributes to him.
May he rest in peace X

Professor Gordon Dyer - Teacher, mentor and friend are what quickly comes to mind when I think of Professor Gordon Dyer. It took me over 60 years to discover my love for writing and it was in Professor Dyer's writing class at the Duarte Senior Center that awakened the writer in me. I treasure my time in that class and the special bond that developed between the professor and me and by extension, with the rest of the class. Due to my great respect and admiration for Professor Dyer, I have always addressed him as "Professor Dyer" or simply, :My Professor:.

I recall a particularly meaningful day. It had nothing to do with what happened while class was in session but rather, what occurred after class ended. We were doing our usual after-class routine of putting all the tables and chairs back in order. There was the usual chatting going on when the Professor, leaning back on a table, exclaimed with outstretched arms, " can you feel the love?". That simple act summed up the reason why Professor Dyer was so beloved by all of us. He cultivated the environment that created the bond of respect, compassion and love amongst our group of writers. However, this was not unique to our particular group as it goes far back to his prior classes as confirmed by so many of his former students who attended Professor Dyer's retirement party.and who provided high praises, tributes and testimonials to this outstanding human being. Fittingly, his retirement cake had these words on it: "CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE?". The professor took note of this and reveled in the symbolism of those words. It was at this party that I met Bob for the first time and the love between the Professor and you, Bob, was clearly evident. Thank you Bob for loving and being there for my Professor..Though I have not yet met my Professor's family, he had told me about you and how loving and supportive you've all been. Thank you.

I kept in touch with Professor Dyer via email and we had some meaningful exchanges. One in particular was so touching. Realizing how much he loved reading and of the deeper emotional connections in life, I quoted a few passages from a book entitled "DANCE WHILE YOU CAN....Gentle Reminders to Help You Live Life to the Fullest" by Lance Wubbels. These are a few of my professor's favorites, judging from the response I got from him:

1. Dance while you can...I will quiet my soul...silence the noise in my head and heart...and ask myself what I really want our of life...no matter what I may be feeling...and I will dare move forward in the face of life's challenges.
2. While I still can dance...I will look loved ones in the eyes, take their hands in mine and tell them how much I love them..I will make the most of our time together.
3. While I still can dance..I will hold my loved ones tight and hope to never let them go. How can I dance without them?
4. To dance..I will stop doing things the same old way just because I like to play it safe. I will be daring and courageous and refuse to let fear control my actions.
5. While I still can dance..I will make certain my loved ones know how precious they are to me. I will serve them with my whole heart....with joy and freedom.

I feel privileged to have shared these words with my Professor. He told me that these words were particularly meaningful to him because they were in his thoughts throughout his courageous battle with the disease that took him from us..

Though you are gone, the memories remain and they shall forever dwell in my heart and mind and yes, Professor Dyer, 'I CAN FEEL THE LOVE!"

It's all good, professor, for the love remains......

Gordon and Bob have been wonderful neighbors to us over the 10+ years we have lived in Monrovia. Gordon was an amazing individual surrounding himself with life and positive energy that always radiated back. When i reflect on Gordon I have to say he would be a role-model for me in his kindness, consideration, love of the arts and interest in continued education through out his life. He created a beautiful garden which was his "heaven on earth" and I know he's in a much bigger garden now and even more wonderful. Gordon you are not forgotten and will long be remembered.
Heart felt condolences to your loving pardoner Bob.
