Tomasita (Tommie) Saiz was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 22, 1926.   Her parents and siblings lived in Albuquerque for many years. As a young lady, she moved to Los Angeles, where she met Benjamin Martinez.  They were married in 1947 and had three children Mary, Michael and Randy.
