Thomas Peter Moreno (83) of Azusa, California passed away August 5th in his home surrounded by his loved ones. Tom was born February 7, 1936 in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the fourth of five children to Jose Ruiz Moreno of Madrid, Spain and Kathleen (“Kitty”) Kelly of Boston, Massachusetts. Together they pursued the limitless opportunities California offered, settling in Duarte along historic U.S. Route 66. After attending Monrovia Arcadia Duarte (MAD) High School, Tom enlisted in the Air Force completing his tour of duty in 1959. In 1963, he earned a B.A. at the University of California at Riverside and several advanced degrees including a law degree, an MBA, and a CFP certification. He was also multi-lingual, having learned to speak seven languages. Tom met and married his forever love, Nubia del Socorro Estrada, on February 3, 1968. His career focused on finance and international banking, while also supporting the defense of our National Security as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired fully in 1996 and enjoyed many travels with Nubia.
He and Nubia raised their three boys instilling in them a strong Catholic upbringing, core family values and a patriotism and service for his country. Tom enjoyed the fine arts having played drums, piano and guitar and had a passion for Jazz music and Glenn Miller. He also pursued acting and was accepted to the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
His legacy was his devotion and commitment to his family. He believed life’s true measure of success was the number of quality memories one could make in a lifetime. His example as a loving father and devout husband could have only been surpassed by his patriotism and love for his country.
Tom is survived by his wife Nubia, his children Tommy (Michelle) Moreno, Kevin Moreno, and Ian (Shelley) Moreno, his grandchildren Brandon, Ryan, Conner, Elliana, and Gabriella, brother Dick (Mila), Moreno, and sister Rosemary (Larry Kier) Yull. Tom was preceded in death by his older sister Dolores Moreno (2008) and older brother Joe Moreno (2017).
The family is indebted eternally for the devoted and loving care provided by son Kevin for his dad these last several years.
